Why Boothill Graveyard is World Famous and Why You Should Visit It

Boothill Graveyard, one of the most famous sites in Tombstone, Arizona, got its name because it is the final resting place of three notorious outlaws, Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury and Tom McLaury. These “Cochise County Cowboys” were killed during the famed Gunfight at the OK Corral. And this spooky yet interesting fact has made Boothill Graveyard one of the most popular Old Tombstone tourist destinations to this day. Also buried in Boothill are some of the most colorful characters of Old Tombstone, the biggest silver mining boomtown of the West.

The unbelievable richness of the silver finds around Tombstone drew prospectors, gamblers, and gunfighters along with “legitimate” types like lawyers, geologists, bankers, and of course undertakers. Within ten years after the town’s founding in 1877 by prospector Ed Schieffelin, the Old Tombstone silver district produced $40 to $85 million in silver bullion, and the town’s population grew from around 100 to 14,000.

Today, the old graveyard is a popular destination for history buffs and Hollywood fans alike. Visitors can explore the gravesites of Clanton, McLaury and McLaury, as well as those of other notables like China Mary, who owned the general store and served as her own moneylender.

Many other Chinese people who lived and worked in Old Tombstone are also thought to be buried in Boothill – in unmarked graves.

Even the name “Boothill” is a fascinating glimpse into the violent history of the American frontier, because so many of the people who are buried there died violently – with their boots on. Can you imagine dying this way? Wow!

And if you want more hair-raising ghostly facts, stories, and tours around this area, be sure to visit Old Tombstone Western Theme Park, one of the most thrilling attractions in modern Tombstone, Arizona.
